USMLE rollout notice May 14, 2026; NBME interface notice June 8, 2026.
USMLE announced on May 14, 2026 that updated delivery software was in place for all three Steps. Its notice describes interface and navigation changes, image-contrast adjustment, and more, shorter blocks. The software rollout itself did not change total items or overall test length.
NBME’s separate June 8 notice describes its updated self-assessment interface and a free Sample Assessment containing a tutorial and 12 questions. That small interface sample is not a free version of every paid NBME self-assessment.
What to do with this update
- Open the official sample-material page for your Step and follow its current interactive-practice link.
- Practice finding instructions and using navigation and image tools, rather than only answering familiar sample questions.
- For Step 3, also use the official CCS practice. A multiple-choice block in this QBank does not reproduce interactive case management.
- Use FreeUSMLE for additional learning blocks. Its custom timer and controls should not be treated as an exact replica of the official interface.
Use current official instructions for block timing and examination procedures. The software announcement is separate from subsequent content updates.
